Drew the Zombie Wakes Up! - Intro

A Blood and Guts Zombie - Disassociation

For the first 32 years of Drew's life he walked the earth a member of the living-dead; a monster in mood, demeanor and physicality. At that adult age, he finally found a way to wake himself up. With the help of an IBP trained therapist Drew learned how to reincorporate his mind back into his body.

As a non-zombie child Drew experienced several common instances of non-supportive adults and physically abusive siblings that made him hide, figuratively, in his head; to Disassociate from his surroundings:

"Dissociation is a mental process, which produces a lack of connection in a person's thoughts, memories, feelings, actions, or sense of identity. During the period of time when a person is dissociating, certain information is not associated with other information as it normally would be." (Ipbonline¹)

Drew looked for the checklist that always accompanies a medical definition like the one above:

  • depression
  • mood swings
  • suicidal tendencies
  • panic attacks and phobias
  • alcohol and drug abuse
  • compulsions and rituals
  • eating disorders
  • hallucinations
  • headaches, amnesia
  • time loss, trances
  • "out of body" experiences
  •  (Ipbonline²)

Drew had read enough, he was a zombie. Disassociation was his way and he knew he had been walking through life, dead - un-aware.

This was a hard thing for Drew to face. He knew he had to change, wanted to change, but felt absolutely powerless in doing so.

How, he would ask, could a vacant, lifeless zombie be awakened and become a living participant in the physical world? How did Drew "wake up"?

How Can a Zombie Wake Up?

Back in that year 32, in a hazy moment of clarity, Drew reached out and found a IBP (Integrative Body Psychotherapy) Therapist and delved into this new world of physical presence. Drew stayed in the room long enough to hear the therapist talking about what a somatic experience was. The definition is:

so·mat·ic adj.  Of, relating to, or affecting the body, especially as distinguished from a body part, the mind, or the environment; corporeal or physical.

"Life is first and foremost a somatic experience. For psychotherapy to be effective, each intellectual insight must have an "inside" awakening, an interior somatic awareness. To embody life's knowledge we must know how to listen to our somatic intelligence.

Without essential somatic intelligence, emotional and behavioral patterns do not change appreciably. Psychotherapy becomes endless statements of disembodied intellectual explanations of the "whys" of life." (Ipbonline³)

The first thing the therapist taught Drew was the action of becoming 'present' in the room and how to tell when you are "in your head" and not present. The zombie was urged to name "objects and colors" where he would scan the room and name each successive piece of furniture or knick-knack and its color. This brought Drew back into his aware body and out of his 'mind' (sorry, pun intended).

Another favorite body awareness exercise that Drew practiced was "feeling the body". When a zombie 'zones' out they can reclaim the feeling of their parts - feel their feet on the ground, their skin itch and even a pinch can help someone remember the sensation of being in their body - pain, a scratch are both somatic experiences.

So What? What's Your point?

The point is that there are millions of zombies like this walking the earth. The point is that disassociation is a common and complex mental state that through hard work and the right tools can be corrected.

Through a series of articles we will chronicle the zombie Drew 's journey from mindless dead-person to living breathing, feeling human. We will examine the steps that this zombie took so that this experience may help another zombie in the world find their way back into their body.
